Main purpose of job:
This job offers the successful candidate an opportunity to work in the high-performing Department of Business & Trade (DBT) team at the British Office Taipei.
DBT’s role is to promote UK’s business interests worldwide, and the job holder will contribute to the UK’s prosperity by assisting UK businesses wishing to export to and/or establish a presence in Taiwan. This is an exciting time to join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). Our mission is to help businesses export, drive inward and outward investment, negotiate market access, and to champion free trade.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the promotion of UK business interests in the healthcare and life science sectors.
Core responsibilities:
Stakeholder Engagement (30%)
• Developing and maintaining strategic relationships through proactive interaction with British companies (e.g. GSK, AstraZeneca) to understand their business interests and where they need UK Government support;
• Be the contact point for UK companies in the healthcare and life sciences sectors looking to do business in Taiwan.
• Executing well-planned interventions (meetings, introductions, partnerships, government engagement, trade expos etc.), resulting in the delivery of ambitious export value targets across the sector(s) for which the officer is responsible. For example, BioAsia expo.
• Deliver policy dialogues, working with the British Council and the British Chamber of Commerce Taipei.
• Provide help and advice to UK companies in support of them landing commercial contracts in Taiwan.
Business Development (25%)
• Scoping business opportunities for UK exporters in life science & healthcare sector in order to enhance the pipeline and effectively respond to developments in the market and opportunities for UK companies
• Pursue business opportunities on behalf of the UK supply chain and facilitate market entry, including providing market intelligence and arranging B2B and B2G meetings.
• Scoping possibility of Taiwanese Investment in the UK into the life science and healthcare sectors. This will involve working with both Taiwanese healthcare companies and with VCs.
Market Access & Trade Policy (25%)
• Working closely with the British Office market access lead, Economic Section and UK teams, you will identify, analyse and work to resolve market access issues for UK life sciences and healthcare firms in the Taiwan market.
• Market access refers to the ability of a company to sell goods and services across borders, and can include barriers such as tariffs, regulations, duties, and quotas. You will work with colleagues to develop and implement plans to resolve priority barriers across a range of sectors, for example leveraging senior visitors, trade talks and projects.
• You will report key updates to UK and regional colleagues, including through the UK’s Digital Market Access Service (DMAS) system. where relevant.
Project Management (20%)
• Project managing planned marketing activities, working with British Council, British Chamber of Commerce Taipei and other teams in the British Office to support UK exports.
• Collaborating across regional and HQ sector teams, especially North East Asia, APAC, healthcare and life science teams, to deliver wider British Office and DBT objectives.
• Deliver policy dialogues, working with the British Council and the British Chamber of Commerce Taipei.
• Demonstrate flexibility and agility responding to changing requirements of DBT and Post.
Additional requirements:
• This role involves occasional travel within Taiwan, Asia Pacific and to the UK.
Working patterns:
British Office Taipei has a strong commitment to work/life balance. Standard office hours are 9.00-17.00 with flexi-hours possibility within the opening hours 8.30-18.30. We also have mobile technology and offer hybrid working with remote working days to be agreed with line managers.
